The Kumon Edenvale Study Centre initially opened in 1996, as the Instructor wanted a method by which to instil practical study skills for her own children.  It soon became evident to her that there was a greater need for this method throughout the community.

The centre is situated across the road from the Van Riebeeck Mall and is easily accessible from Edenvale CBD and 6 surrounding primary schools.  We cater for a variety of students from 5 years old to adulthood, as well as students with special needs. We are open for four afternoons a week (Mondays to Thursdays). Students attend centre on two afternoons a week for a 30 minute timeslot per subject. This enables all students to get individualised attention and support from our 10 fully trained assistants. Students, however, complete their Kumon worksheets on every day of the week.

There is a homework exchange table at the entrance to the centre where homework is checked and new homework issued.  Students then move to the study area where they work and  where concentration is nurtured and self-learning abilities are developed.

In our separate English section, our library contains a wide variety of books from the Kumon Recommended Reading List.  We also have an Early Learner section overseen by a dedicated Early Learner assistant.

About the Instructor

My name is Matie van Den Berg. I have been a Kumon Instructor since 1996 and I am the mother of 4 beautiful children. I also have a loving husband who has from the start of our Kumon journey supported my dreams of developing an environment for our children to excel at school. Their needs motivated me to look for something more. I wanted to build their confidence in school work and for this reason I started my Kumon Edenvale Study Centre.

Initially I ran my centre from my home and only my children, my family’s children  - and a few friends’ children were enrolled. My study centre grew so rapidly that we now have a Kumon “house” (as we call it) from where we run the centre.

Before I became a Kumon Instructor, I was a Maths teacher who realised that there was a need for something more than just school. Kumon became that something I knew every child should experience. Every child deserves to feel confident and motivated in their schoolwork as well as in their everyday life. They should also be given the opportunity to develop necessary life skills – not only academic ability but also skills needed on their personal life journey.

It has been so rewarding to see every student develop, even students who have many learning challenges. It is a great feeling to see students who previously underachieved, excel to become leaders in their community and achieving 9 distinctions in Grade 12.

Kumon Edenvale is a family-run centre. My children all have, or are currently working in the centre and have personally experienced what the Kumon journey can help one achieve. My vision is for every student who enrols at Kumon Edenvale to develop their full potential and enjoy learning throughout life.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
