The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Established in 2002, the La Lucia Study Centre is the largest Kumon centre in KwaZulu-Natal. The full-time Instructor, Sandra de Abreu, is supported by an experienced team of trusted assistants.

Sandra has a particular interest in pre-schoolers and early literacy and numeracy development. The La Lucia Study Centre enrols students as young as 3 years old, giving them a solid foundation for effective learning throughout their lives.

The Kumon Programme caters for all ages and abilities, and each student receives tailored, hands-on instruction that allows them to reach their optimum potential without the constraints of society's expectations.

Sandra places a high value on close communication with her Kumon parents, and you will receive regular progress updates, beginning with the Enrolment Interview where your child's individually set starting point is determined.

The spacious La Lucia venue has dedicated areas for both the Kumon Maths and English Programmes. There is ample parking on the church premises, with a leafy garden waiting area for parents.

About the Instructor

I'm Sandra, the Instructor of the La Lucia Study Centre.

I became a Kumon Instructor in 2002, transitioning from a fruitful career in Human Resources, Training and Development. While my experience working with adults was fulfilling, I realised that I wanted to dedicate myself to developing young minds, where the opportunity to unlock their limitless potential was so much greater.

I found cultivating the independence and confidence of little people so rewarding that I was inspired to open my second Kumon Study Centre that same year.

In addition to nurturing the ability of my many students, I am a dedicated mom, raising my son to be the "sound, capable person" that is my goal for every Kumon student.

I strive to be as approachable as possible - whether you are looking to start your Kumon journey, or have been a Kumon parent for many years, you're welcome to contact me to discuss your child.

I look forward to seeing you soon at the La Lucia Study Centre.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
