About this centre

KUMON CONNECT available
Fourways Kumon Study Centre is situated at the Eagles Nest Lodge in close proximity to a number of surrounding schools. The shopping centre boasts a wide variety of shops and has ample free parking so is convenient for parents while their children attend the Kumon centre.

Under the professional guidance of Instructor Sophia Kyprianides and 3 dedicated assistants, students are encouraged to enrol in both the Maths and the English programmes to ensure optimal results. Students who attend the centre range between the ages of 3 and 16 years old and come to Kumon for various reasons. Some may be struggling with a specific aspect in either English or Maths and therefor require academic intervention, whilst others aim to build confidence and develop essential study skills. All students are encouraged to make full use of the library in order to develop their love of reading.

This quality study centre, which opened its doors in February 2014, provides a warm, caring environment in which young minds can flourish and fulfil their potential. The centre implements the Kumon method in all instructional procedures, thus effectively inspiring and nurturing children of all ages to development long- term life skills and optimise their inherent capabilities.

About the Instructor

Since becoming the mother of 2 beautiful and highly inquisitive daughters, I have discovered the world through the eyes of a child. Children have an uncanny ability to see beauty in the most simple of things. This realisation has caused me to truly appreciate life’s smaller comforts and not take them for granted.

Before becoming an Instructor, I had heard wonderful things about Kumon and noticed how my cousins’ children, who were enrolled in the programmes, had flourished over the years: not only on an academic basis but also in terms of gaining confidence and building valuable life skills. Central to the Kumon philosophy is the concept that every child has untapped potential to excel. It was this philosophy as well as watching my cousin’s children transform into highly competent, well rounded individuals that ignited my interest in Kumon. I believe that a good education determines your future and forms the basis for a successful life. I am completely dedicated to providing not only my own children but also the children within my community with the best possible skills to optimise their potential and in so doing ensure that they succeed in all aspects of their life. The onus is on us as parents to provide our children with a strong educational background that will give them the platform from which to become strong, independent and confident individuals.

Prior to opening my centre, I utilised my Journalism and English degree on academic research as well as offering my services as an English and Maths tutor for primary and high school learners. After working with my husband in his business for over 10 years, I decided that it was time to challenge myself and use my knowledge to benefit others. I am thoroughly enjoying every second of my role as a Kumon Instructor. I love working with children and that, coupled with my passion for the English language and love of maths, makes a perfect recipe for a successful Kumon centre.

With my business experience, my excellent work ethic as well as my educational background, I feel Kumon has given me the opportunity to give back to the community and assist in the development of South Africa's future generation.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
