KUMON CONNECT available
Did you know you can now study Kumon using digital worksheets? This study centre is proud to offer KUMON CONNECT. Click here for more details.

The Stellenbosch Kumon Centre is located at the Reformed Church in Marais Street and has been in operation in this historic town since 1999! The Centre is bright, dynamic, and provides a positive environment where students benefit from an individualised approach to learning.
The low student to staff ratio makes it possible for students to receive personalised support and encouragement from the Instructor and Assistant while they develop their independent learning capabilities.
The students currently range from pre-school right through to high school learners. Classes are not restricted by grades as everyone is on the same journey of developing their potential to the maximum.
The centre’s focus is to provide students with the skills to not only become proficient in their Mathematics or English studies, but to enjoy the subjects as well. Competence leads to confidence!
Our in centre classes are also complemented with on-line study options and a KUMON CONNECT. These digital options provide flexibility in an ever changing world while preserving the core elements that make the Kumon Programme effective.
There is plenty of shaded parking space available.

About the Instructor

My name is Dieter Hulshof and I am very fortunate to be the Instructor at the Stellenbosch Kumon Centre. Having been a Kumon student myself many years ago, as well as having been an assistant, I have experienced and seen how beneficial the programme can be. Now as a Kumon Instructor I am more convinced than ever in the benefit this process of learning offers to everyone involved: students, parents, and staff alike.

With my background as a Medical Technologist I have gained a lot of experience in training people in a very specific environment. This, together with my experience of the Kumon method and my belief that anyone can become smarter by developing their ability with deliberate steps, has led me on the road to become an Instructor. It is a great road to be on!

The best part about being a Kumon Instructor is being part of the student’s victories, both great and small. Experiencing those “aha!” moments and sharing the excitement that comes with it makes it all worthwhile. It is a privilege to see the students grow and develop into confident self-learners who overcome challenges with optimism. I look forward to being part of this process as the students keep developing such a wide variety of skills while working through the Kumon Programme.

The Stellenbosch Centre has a long and valuable history and we are all committed to continue this tradition, now and in the future. We firmly believe in the joy of learning and that it comes from providing encouragement, celebrating achievement and working at just the right level.

Join us at the Stellenbosch Kumon Centre as we face these opportunities together!

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
